Strong Coffee and some Plastic for Breakfast

One of my inspirations for becoming a freelancer was an article I read from Fine Scale Modeler which was about one of their writers working on a kit for an hour before heading off for work. In the said article, the author (whose name I've sadly forgotten) would wake up an hour early, make himself a strong cup of coffee and put in an hour's worth of model kit building while his kids and wife is still asleep. After an hour he packs up and heads for work.

I envied him a lot.

The kit above is a 1/144 No Grade Gundam Sandrock from the initial Gundam Wing series. It is a very old kit from an old anime series. This one is special to me because Manay (our Nanny who has been with us for more than 30 years) gave this to me way back in college as a random gift. Granted, the orignal kit was horrible but never the less, the Sandrock was my favorite.

The first thing I do when I wake up is I brush my teeth and make myself a strong mug of coffee. After that I head to my model kit workbench and work on my Sandrock for 30 to 45 minutes while listening to a podcast or my playlist before I start with the stuff that I need to do at the studio. This part of my day helps me think, and it steels me for whatever I need to do everyday to get my life goals.

There are a lot of reasons why we do the things that we do. Sometimes the apparently mundane stuff that we come across in life affects us in a grand way. There is no doubt that reading that old magazine article influenced my decision to try working at home.

But it is not all about me spending time on my kits.

To me it means that I have been able to accomplish one of the things that I've always wanted to do. It's about knowing what you want, planning on how to do it and making the decision to give it a go. It's about clarity, about the many things that we want out of life and doing the necessary steps to get there.

I'm not saying that I'm already where I want to be. But working on my kits remind me that one of the things on my to do list has been taken care of and that I can get the rest done if I pray to God and work on them hard enough.

My head is buzzing right now haha! I've just pulled-off an all-nighter last night doing an art test for a comic book gig. Hope God blesses me with that one hehe.

It's been too long since my last blog entry at another blog site. Things have been pretty hectic for me since I started working freelance last April and I really can't say that things are shaping up the way I had originally envisioned them to be but so far the Lord has been great and I know that this coming 2nd half of 2012 will be awesome.

So here's how my current work area looks like :)

I've been meaning to get back to guitar playing but unfortunately I haven't had the time to play as much hehe! It's just there because it was meant to be there even though it spends most of its life in the guitar cabinet. But the amp is a permanent feature in the studio so there's hope that one day I get to play with Gilberto as much as I want to.
